Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour was such a huge hit and also pretty short, with 11 songs and a half-hour running time. It’s just a little morsel! So, what's next?
Thankfully, Liv is keeping us fed with her latest single, "Vampire," which details the horrors of a past relationship that bled her dry. Fans were quick to speculate that the track was inspired by her rumored past relationships with DJ Zack Bia or filmmaker Adam Faze, but Olivia said everything and nothing all at once during an interview on SiriusXM's Hits1 when she revealed the song "looks inward."
"It’s more about my regret and kind of beating myself up for doing something that I knew wasn’t gonna turn out great and kind of just taking ownership of that and dealing with those feelings," she explained. "That’s what it means to me, but obviously anyone can, you know, have their own interpretation of it, but that’s kind of why it was so special to me."
Not to mention, the Grammy winner granted us our personal new favorite noun, "famefucker," thanks to her punchy delivery on the lead single. TYSM, Olivia!
Ahead of "Vampire," Olivia revealed that her second studio album, Guts, will drop on September 8. While the wait for new music has been seriously brutal, we've gathered every single detail we know about Guts so we don't miss a beat once it's released.
When does Guts by Olivia Rodrigo come out?
Mark your calendars, y'all! Guts by Olivia Rodrigo is hitting streaming platforms on September 8, 2023. Olivia announced her second album on June 26, 2023 with an Instagram post, writing, "my sophomore album GUTS comes out september 8th. i am so proud of this record and I can’t wait to share it with you all! u can presave it now! xoxoxoxo❤️💜💌🖤."
According to Teen Vogue, some Taylor Swiftian numerology theories surfaced that Olivia was going to release a secret second album in summer 2021. That obviously didn’t happen.
In a 2021 article for Nylon, an interviewer asked point-blank what’s next for Olivia in the future, every high school graduate’s favorite question:
“My life is really great right now. It’s so awesome to do music and feel seen in that way. I’m going to graduate high school soon, which is going to be fun. I’m so busy. We’ll get a cake or something.”
Thankfully, we won't have to wait much longer for some new #sadgirlhours tunes and angsty bangers from Olivia.
Has Olivia Rodrigo teased new music?
In August 2021, Olivia told Clash that her next LP is “probably going to be a lot happier than the record I just made.” She also mentioned St. Vincent and Jack White as dream collaborators and said that her “tastes are always changing, and…that will be reflected in the next album.”
Since then, Liv embarked on her Sour tour, attended the Met Gala (multiple times, we might add), and graduated from her role as Nini on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. And, of course, she teased what was to come from her sophomore record.
Before the release of "Vampire," she brilliantly laid out clues for fans on her Sour Heartbreak Hotline, which originally came out when she released her debut album in 2021.Two years later, dedicated Olivia fans tried dialing the hotline at 323-622-SOUR (7687), and they discovered that she teased the first 15 seconds of "Vampire" ahead of its release on June 20, 2023.
A few days later, she teased what would be the grandiose, louder production leading up to the bridge through the hotline.
What is Olivia Rodrigo's Guts tracklist?
Livies, our time is now! Olivia unveiled the official tracklist for her sophomore record, Guts, with a video posted to her social media accounts on August 1. In the clip, she types each song title out on a classic typewriter, and TBH, we're totally here for the vintage-inspired vibe.
"SEPTEMBER 8TH!!!!!! 💓👽🌸😎🤘🏼👾💕," she captioned the reveal.
The official Guts tracklist features 12 new songs, as follows:
- All American Bitch
- Bad Idea Right?
- Vampire
- Lacy
- Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl
- Making The Bed
- Logical
- Get Him Back
- Love is Embarrassing
- The Grudge
- Pretty Isn’t Pretty
- Teenage Dream
With a little more than a month till the album's release, that gives fans more than enough time to hyper-fixate on what these songs might be about based on their titles alone. (It's me, hi. I'm the one hyper-fixating.)
On July 31, Olivia posted a pre-save link to her social media accounts, and, ahem, included a random video. Any Livie knows that no video is purely random, so of course, fans hunted for clues throughout the 1-minute clip.
It turns out Olivia was totally teasing Guts' tracklist, with possible hints including "Book Club," "18"/"19", "Bad Idea, Right," "Stranger," and "Obsessed." There's also a line of what could potentially be lyrics that reads "Now I hold it like a grudge."
Only a few more weeks until Olivia's new album drops and we can dissect it all together!
