Look, I'm not going to say you need a face serum. FYI, the only three non-negotiables for your skincare routine are face wash, moisturizer, and sunscreen. But if you want to step up your skin game and target specific concerns, a serum is a great place to start. “Serums are essentially just shots of extremely concentrated nutrients, hydrators, and antioxidants that really amp up your skin health as soon as you apply them,” board-certified dermatologist Mona Gohara, MD, has told Cosmo. And if your skin is looking and feeling a little parched or like it could use an extra dose of hydration, you might want to consider getting a hydrating serum.

Hydrating serums (and serums in general) typically have a thin consistency. This means that the product can penetrate your skin v quickly and v effectively, showing noticeable results upon application. Translation: You'll immediately be left with dewy, plump, and overall healthier-looking skin. And because I don't know anyone in the world who doesn't want that, including myself, I personally tested and reviewed the best hydrating serums on the market, referenced tips from Dr. Gohara, and spoke with board-certified dermatologist Macrene Alexiades, MD, to get all the deets and facts, below.

✔️ FYI: We updated this article in July 2023 to give you the most up-to-date info on hydrating serums, including several we personally tested, products our experts love, and how to choose the best hydrating serum for yourself.

The Inkey List Polyglutamic Acid Hydrating Serum

Pros
  • Formula layers well under makeup
Cons

Polyglutamic acid doesn't roll off the tongue quite like hyaluronic acid, but don't let that deter you from trying it out. This ingredient is another great humectant that binds water so your skin can soak up all the hydration. If your foundation tends to look cakey, you'll be happy to know this formula layers well under makeup and gets rid of dry patches that create unwanted texture that's exacerbated by your layers of makeup.

What is a hydrating serum?

line break

When you want to hydrate your body, you drink water, right? Well, your skin also needs water to maintain a healthy skin barrier (cells and lipids that protect your skin), and applying a hydrating serum is like giving your skin a big ol' drink of water.

If you love instant gratification (don't we all?), then a hydrating serum is one product you'll want to add to your lineup of skincare products because it works fast. A few drops or a thin layer of the formula over dehydrated areas will give your skin a noticeably plumper, dewier, more supple appearance with an improvement in fine lines, wrinkles, and skin texture.

Is hydrating serum the same as moisturizer?

line break

No, hydrating serum and moisturizer are not the same—but they work really well together when layered. “A hydrating facial serum includes humectants,” explains board-certified dermatologist Macrene Alexiades, MD. “These are ingredients that serve to draw in water molecules.” A moisturizer, on the other hand, typically contains emollient ingredients to soften the skin and/or occlusive ingredients to trap the water inside. Without an occlusive, all that water in your skin will escape (an action called transepidermal water loss), so you want to lock it all in with an occlusive (anyone who knows about slugging knows what I'm talkin' about).

While some moisturizers contain emollients, occlusives, and humectants, not all do, so the general order of application would be to first apply your lightweight hydrating serum to a slightly damp face, then immediately layer on your moisturizer to seal it and help the hydrating serum get to work underneath.

What to look for in a hydrating serum:

line break

Humectant ingredients

As we mentioned above, humectants increase hydration, so the most important thing to look for in a hydrating serum is—you guessed it—humectants. Examples of humectants include hyaluronic acid, sodium hyaluronate, glycerin, lactic acid, peptides, polyglutamic acid, some plant extracts, and snail mucin, to name a few. If you see any of the above on your product's ingredient label, you know it's going to have some hydrating benefits, and it might take a little trial and error to find what you like best.

A formula that suits your needs

Although Dr. Alexiades recommends everyone uses a hydrating moisturizer or hydrating serum, the choice as to whether or not to use a cream or serum formula depends on your skin type. For those with mature or dry skin, Dr. Alexiades says moisturizer may be best, but those with acne-prone or oily skin would probably prefer a lightweight hydrating serum (just don't forget to use your moisturizer for oily skin over top). And for those who want added benefits or an extra boost of hydration, Dr. Alexiades recommends applying both a hydrating serum, followed by a hydrating moisturizer.
