If you’re into BDSM (or BDSM-adjacent) sex, put the triceratops position on your short list. “The triceratops sex position is great for those who like to be dominated by their partner, which is a very common fantasy,” says clinical sexologist Avril Louise Clarke, the intimacy coordinator at ethical and cinematic porn brand ERIKALUST.

To do the triceratops position, the receiver bends over, feet shoulder-length apart, and puts their arms behind their back. The penetrating partner pins down their arms to their sides, parallel to the ground, and penetrates from behind, either anally or vaginally. (Not sure if this is up your alley? Take a kink test to find out!)

“This is a fabulous position for people who enjoy dominance and submission,” says sex educator Rebecca Blanton, aka Auntie Vice, cohost of the Fat Chicks on Top podcast. “Having your arms pinned behind you (and possibly bound behind you) leaves the other person in control of how you’re penetrated, and the speed of the thrusting during the session.”

According to Clarke, the triceratops gives you lots of room for variation and experimentation. You can do it standing up or on your knees, and if you’re usually the receiving partner, it could give you the opportunity to take control. “Role reversal can add excitement to a seemingly submissive position, where the bottom can control the speed of movements and boss the top,” says Clarke. You can do this by having the penetrating partner stand still (or with their back against a wall) while the receiving partner moves their upper body back and forth. Think: as if they were bouncing up and down, just parallel to the ground.

Another pro to the triceratops? It lets the receiver control the depth of penetration. The receiving partner can position their legs apart while the penetrating partner stands between them, to allow for deep penetration, or they can close their legs together with their partner’s legs on the outside, to allow for shallower thrusts and penetration that can stimulate the inner walls of the vagina or anus, says Ruby Payne, sex expert at adult toy retailer UberKinky.

“If the penetrating partner is a multitasker, they can use one of their hands to hold both of the receiver’s hands and use their free hand to rub or stimulate the clit,” says Aliyah Moore, PhD, resident certified sex therapist at SexualAlpha.. “There are also vibrating sex toys that can do wonders on the clit. [If the penetrating partner has a penis], they can also put a wand vibrator’s broad tip around the receiver’s anus, perineum, or even under their own balls for intense sensations.”

Convinced yet? If yes, here are eight variations of the triceratops position you should try ASAP. Make sure to chat through boundaries and consent with your partner before diving in, especially because this position involves restraint elements and could be a little on the rougher side for some folks.

The Classic Triceratops

“If you’re the receiver, bend over so your stomach is parallel to the ground. Look down at the floor and spread your legs. Have your partner enter you vaginally or anally from behind while holding your arms alongside your body, parallel to the floor,” says Payne.

2

The Sleeping Triceratops

For a more comfortable variation of the triceratops, the receiving partner can bend forward and rest their head and neck on a bed with pillows, while the penetrating partner helps support them by holding their wrists by their sides like in the classic triceratops.

3

The Flying Triceratops

“This is an even more physical, rough variant of an already very physical sex position,” says Clarke. “Instead of holding the receiving partner’s hands to their sides, both of their wrists are held together behind their back in one of the penetrating partner’s hands, while their other hand grips the receiver’s hair, tugging it back.” (This, of course, all done with very clear consent from the receiver.)

The Tri-Horn

If you really want to lean into the tri in triceratops, good news: It can be adjusted for threesomes. “Two partners assume the conventional positions: the receiving partner bends toward the floor with their wrists pinned to their sides in the firm grip of the penetrating partner. The receiving partner then performs simultaneous oral sex on a third partner,” says Clarke. “This is a very submissive and sexy position. As the receiver, you’re surrounded by sex—hot.”

5

The Kneeling Triceratops

For an even more submissive vibe, the receiver gets on their knees. “The receiving partner kneels on the bed in doggy-style while the penetrating partner stands behind them,” says Blanton. “This can help put the receiver’s anus and/or vagina in a much more accessible position.” What happens with those very accessible parts is up to you.

The Role Reversal

“Play with gender dynamics in this position using a harness and a strap-on, as this is a great position for anal,” says Jess O’Reilly, PhD, sex expert at Astroglide. “One partner can wear a strap-on around their pelvis and the other can bend over and experiment with anal penetration.” You can start with finger penetration if a dildo seems like too much

The Leapfrog

The leapfrog gives the receiver a little more control over what’s happening. “The receiving partner squats down with their feet on the floor, rather than kneeling,” says Tatyana Dyachenko, sex therapist and relationship expert for Peaches and Screams. Basically, you squat like a frog, but like…a sexy, in-control frog.

8

The Wheelbarrow

@LUCYMACARONI

“Feeling more adventurous or energetic? Then the wheelbarrow variation is perfect. It even doubles as a workout move,” says Aliyah Moore, PhD, resident certified sex therapist at SexualAlpha. “This variation requires a lot of arm strength from the receiver and a lot of balance from the giver. Thus, make sure to try this move earlier to save your strength and energy for the rest of your fun stuff.”

9

The Double Trouple

@LUCYMACARONI

Leave no hole unfilled. “If you’re being penetrated anally, have your partner use their free hand to finger you or use another dildo to mimic double penetration,” says Moore. “Or you can have it the other way. While your partner penetrates you vaginally, they can put their finger on your anus or use a vibrating butt plug for mind-blowing Os.”
