Tom Cruise was notably absent from Sunday night’s Oscars ceremony despite the fact that his movie Top Gun: Maverick was nominated for several awards. Entertainment Tonight initially reported that Tom was busy on the set of Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part II in the United Kingdom and couldn’t leave production, but according to the Daily Mail, the real reason is far more, uh, dramatic.
The outlet reports that Tom “refused to attend” the show because his ex-wife Nicole Kidman would also be there. One source in particular claimed, “Tom was not there because she was there, and he did not want a run-in,” although other sources close to the actor said his decision to skip the event was “not personal.”
Tom and Nicole divorced after 12 years of marriage in 2002 and apparently haven’t been seen together “for years.” In fact, the Daily Mail notes that Nicole was absent from a pre-Oscars luncheon Tom attended last month.
These two have barely talked about their divorce amid many rumors regarding why they parted ways, but back in 2012, Nicole gave a rare interview on the subject to DuJour magazine, saying, “I thought our life together was perfect. It took me a very long time to heal. It was a shock to my system.”
Nowadays, Nicole is obviously married to Kieth Urban, and their Oscars PDA was truly on another level.
